Twitter Debuts Two-Step Authentication
Twitter today increased the security it offers to users of its microblogging platform by adding two-step authentication to the sign-in process. The process requires that users add a mobile phone number to their account. With the two-step authentication enabled, Twitter will send an SMS to that number with a code that must be entered in addition to the username and password in order to gain access to the Twitter account. The code will be sent each time the person logs in via the web, but is not required for subsequent sign-ins through Twitter apps.

Samsung today indicated through one of its official Twitter accounts that the Verizon variant of the Galaxy S 4 is now available. It costs $199.99 for the 16GB model with a new contract.

Verizon Wireless today made Verizon Cloud, its backup and storage service, available to the Apple iPhone. Verizon Cloud lets customers sync their smartphones and tablets to Verizon's servers. It offers 500MB of storage for free, and up to 125GB of storage for $9.99 per month. Verizon says the free option should be enough to backup settings, calls, messages, and contacts. Verizon Cloud was made available to Android devices last month. The application is free to download from the iTunes App Store.

IS WALKING THE STAIRS A GOOD EXERCISE?
Walking up and down stairs is a good exercise for several reasons. Walking up stairs burns more calories than walking on flat surfaces, strengthens your legs more, improves your fitness, boosts your spirits and saves time because it allows you to exercise while doing your daily activities. Walking the stairs instead of taking the elevator is the second-most "efficient" way to exercise behind walking instead of driving, according to "Dr. Dean Ornish's Program for Reversing Heart Disease."
You lose more weight walking up stairs at any speed than walking very fast on flat ground, according to the state of Wisconsin's "Calories Burned Per Hour" chart. Walking up stairs burns 690, 563 and 472 calories per hour if you weigh 190, 155 and 130 pounds, respectively. You burn the same amount of calories running 5 mph. Walking 4 mph, which is a "very brisk pace," burns 345, 281 and 236 calories per hour if you weigh 190, 155 and 130 pounds, respectively.
Walking stairs combines two exercises—walking and strength training for your legs. Strengthening your legs increases your walking speed, and faster walking burns more calories. Consequently, walking up stairs will help you lose more weight on future walks on any kind of surface. Stronger muscles also reduce your risk of injuries and "stimulate your bones to maintain a higher, healthier density and stave off osteoporosis," according to "The Complete Guide to Walking."
Walking stairs is more difficult than walking on sidewalks. Your heart rate increases when you work harder, and your fitness improves when your heart rate is 45 percent to 80 percent of your maximum heart rate, which is 220 heartbeats per minute minus your age, writes Ornish. Walking down stairs seems easy, but you must work harder to maintain your balance. You burn more calories and improve your fitness when your muscles work to maintain your balance, wrote "Guide to Walking" author Mark Fenton.
Exercise reduces harmful stress, according to The Merck Manual of Medical Information. Walking stairs during a work break can be incorporated into your daily activity as a way of reducing stress. It can boost your energy and mood, improve your thinking and increase your productivity when you return to work by increasing the amount of the hormones adrenaline and noradrenaline in your body. Walking stairs can simultaneously reduce the amount of chronic stress you experience at work.
You don't need to have a formal exercise program to gain the myriad benefits of exercise. In fact, the best exercise is "part of your daily activities and routine," writes Ornish. Walking stairs can be a part of your daily routine if you work in a multistory office building or shop in a multistory mall. People burned 500 to 800 fewer calories daily in 1980 via informal, routine exercises than they did in 2000, according to "Guide to Walking." Walking stairs can be one of those exercises.

T-Mobile's iPhone Is Unique Variant of AT&T's Model
T-Mobile's version of the iPhone 5 has the same model number (A1428) as the one sold by AT&T, yet has unique tweaks that make it compatible with T-Mobile's WCDMA/HSPA+ network in the 1700 MHz AWS band. Unlocked A1428 iPhone 5s sold by AT&T and Apple will be able to work with T-Mobile's LTE 1700 and WCDMA/HSPA+ 1900 networks with a minor software update, but will never work with T-Mobile's WCDMA/HSPA+ 1700 network, according to an Apple product manager at today's T-Mobile event. That means only iPhone 5s sold by T-Mobile will have full high-speed data coverage from day one. Unlocked iPhone 5s used with T-Mobile will have limited high-speed data coverage at first, improving as T-Mobile makes progress with its network modernization this year.

T-Mobile to Offer Apple iPhone
T-Mobile USA today revealed that it will offer customers the Apple iPhone 5, 4S, and 4. Preorders for the iPhone 5 begin April 5, and the device will be in stores April 12. The Apple iPhone 4S and 4 will be available in select markets later. The iPhone 5, for example, will require a $100 downpayment, with $20 monthly installments added to the customer's bill. The customer can also choose to pay full price for the device. The iPhone 4S will require a $70 downpayment and $20 in monthly payments, and the iPhone 4 will require a $15 downpayment and $15 in monthly payments. According to T-Mobile, Apple customized the iPhone 5 for T-Mobile's network. It supports T-Mobile's LTE network, in addition to HSPA+ in the 1700 and 1900 MHz spectrum. T-Mobile is also the only U.S. carrier to support the iPhone 5's wideband audio capability, which T-Mobile calls HD Voice. The iPhone 4S and iPhone 4 will not be customized for T-Mobile's LTE network, but can access its HSPA+ service in the 1900MHz band.

Valentine's Day 2013 Coming Soon
Saint Valentine's Day, commonly known as Valentine's Day, or the Feast of Saint Valentine, is observed on February 14 each year. It is celebrated in many countries around the world, although it remains a working day in most of them.
St. Valentine's Day began as a liturgical celebration of one or more early Christian saints named Valentinus. The most popular martyrology associated with Saint Valentine was that he was imprisoned for performing weddings for soldiers who were forbidden to marry and for ministering to Christians, who were persecuted under the Roman Empire; during his imprisonment, he is said to have healed the daughter of his jailer Asterius. Legend states that before his execution he wrote "from your Valentine" as a farewell to her. Today, Saint Valentine's Day is an official feast day in the Anglican Communion,] as well as in the Lutheran Church. The Eastern Orthodox Church also celebrates Saint Valentine's Day, albeit on July 6th and July 30th, the former date in honor of the Roman presbyter Saint Valentine, and the latter date in honor of Hieromartyr Valentine, the Bishop of Interamna.
The day was first associated with romantic love in the circle of Geoffrey Chaucer in the High Middle Ages, when the tradition of courtly love flourished. By the 15th century, it had evolved into an occasion in which lovers expressed their love for each other by presenting flowers, offering confectionery, and sending greeting cards (known as "valentines").Valentine's Day symbols that are used today include the heart-shaped outline, doves, and the figure of the winged Cupid. Since the 19th century, handwritten valentines have given way to mass-produced greeting cards.

HBO Go adds AirPlay support
HBO Go has been updated to version 2.0, bringing support for Apple's AirPlay feature to the app. HBO Go users can now stream video from any device running iOS 6 to any Apple TV that’s been updated to software version 5.1.1 or later.
HBO Go has been a feature on Apple TV competitors, such as the Roku, for some time now. Though there have been reports that it is coming to the Apple TV, it has yet to materialize. Until that day comes, allowing customers to use AirPlay to watch HBO content is decent stopgap. Use of HBO Go requires an HBO cable subscription.

Apple releases iOS 6.1.1 for iPhone 4S, addresses cellular problems
Apple has released iOS 6.1.1 but only for the iPhone 4S, at least for now. The update comes amid reports of cellular data issues preventing proper use of the device, originally released in 2011. Apple's release notes include mention of just specifically that:
This update fixes an issue that could impact cellular performance and reliability for iPhone 4S.
The update is available over-the-air (OTA) via Settings > General > Software update, or through iTunes via USB tether.

Evasi0n jailbreak tool updated to version 1.3, now supports iOS 6.0, 6.1 and 6.1.1
The evad3rs team have wasted no time at all in updating their hugely popular evasi0n jailbreak tool to support the just released iOS 6.1.1 firmware. The new evasi0n release, which is now up to version 1.3, fully supports iOS 6.0, 6.1 and 6.1.1. iOS 6.1.1 was released yesterday solely for iPhone 4S devices after widespread reports of poor 3G connectivity and Exchange account problems after the iOS 6.1 update.

evasi0n 1.3 should now correctly support OSX 10.5 and we also lowered the linux glibc requirement to 2.3
The evad3rs team stress that if you are planning on updating to iOS 6.1.1 on your iPhone 4S and want to re-jailbreak then there is a certain way that it has to be done. They warn that doing an OTA update should be avoided and the correct way of doing it would be to make a backup of your device in iTunes and then do a full restore.

Apple announces 128GB iPad 4, available Feb. 5 starting
Apple this morning announced new versions of the fourth-generation iPad, bringing the maximum storage level to 128 gigabytes. Same 9.7-inch retina display, same internals. Just more GBs. The upgraded storage applies to the Wi-Fi-only and Wi-Fi + Cellular versions of the iPad and doubles the previous max. Apple's senior vice president of worldwide marketing, Phil Schiller, had this to say:
“With more than 120 million iPads sold, it’s clear that customers around the world love their iPads, and everyday they are finding more great reasons to work, learn and play on their iPads rather than their old PCs. With twice the storage capacity and an unparalleled selection of over 300,000 native iPad apps, enterprises, educators and artists have even more reasons to use iPad for all their business and personal needs.”
9 to 5 Mac first reported the impending change earlier this week.
The beefier iPads will be available Feb. 5, in either black or white (or both if that's how you roll), for $799 for the Wifi model, and a whopping $929 for the cellular version.

iOS 6.1 jailbreak may arrive as soon as this Sunday
The long rumored jailbreak for iOS 6.1 may arrive as soon as this Sunday. The jailbreak which has been in testing for a while now has been working fine with each beta release of iOS 6.1. The team needed to wait for the official release of iOS 6.1 so it could be fully tested with the final version of the firmware. Well the good news is that after yesterday’s official release of iOS 6.1 all is working fine and we may even see the jailbreak released this Sunday.
MuscleNerd, who is part of the new jailbreak team which goes under the title of Evad3rs confirmed via Twitter that iOS 6.1 final version is safe and can be jailbroken by the same means as the other beta releases of the firmware. The even better news is that in a further tweet, MuscleNerd teased that the jailbreak may even arrive on Super Bowl Sunday.
@MikeBeas @evad3rs yep 6.1 is safe
Hey, did everyone know the Super Bowl is this Sunday? What will you be doing? /cc @evad3rs /evad3rs.com
This untethered jailbreak has been a long time coming but those of you that like to jailbreak your device should not have too much longer to wait now. A point to note however is that the Evd3rs team are advising those who want to jailbreak to avoid the OTA update method and instead connect your device to iTunes and do a full backup and update this way. Apparently doing an over the air update is more time consuming for the team to fully test and also provides different SHSH blobs.

Apple releases iOS 6.1 beta 5 for iPhone and iPad
Apple has released iOS 6.1 beta 5 for iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad. This comes just a day before beta 4 was set to expire, and represents one of the longest gaps between beta releases in iOS' history. Furthermore, beta 5 still hasn't shown up over-the-air (OTA), so rather than the faster, more convenient delta-update-in-place, if you want beta 5 now, now, now, you'll have to download it from developer.apple.com and do a complete update via iTunes or Xcode.
As always, this beta is intended for registered developers so they can try out new application program interfaces (API) and make sure their apps are compatible before iOS 6.1 goes into general availability (GA), presumably sometime in the next couple of months.

RIM CEO Says It May Sell Hardware Division
Research In Motion CEO Thorsten Heins indicated that the company might sell its hardware business after it launches the BlackBerry 10 platform. Speaking to German publication Die Welt, Heins said the company's on-going strategic review could result in a sale of the hardware business or licensing its BlackBerry 10 platform to other hardware companies. Heins has suggested as much before. "The main thing for now is to successfully introduce Blackberry 10. Then we'll see," he said. RIM has spent the last year focusing on relaunching its BlackBerry platform. BlackBerry 10 is a wholly new operating system that uses gesture-based controls to flow through the user interface. It is based, in part, on the QNX core that makes up PlayBook OS. RIM is prepared to launch BlackBerry 10 on January 30, with its first new smartphones to follow soon thereafter.
RIM launches rebranded BlackBerry World web store
At BlackBerry Jam Asia, it was announced that BlackBerry App World would be rebranding to simply BlackBerry World. We've been patiently waiting for the change to drop in, and just nine days from the January 30th BlackBerry 10 event, that change has finally hit the web store. In the late hours last night the team at RIM made the swap and now the store has lost its "app" branding. You can still find the latest apps and games (music and movies soon) but things just have bit of a different look now. The change is coming to the BlackBerry PlayBook in a few weeks (OS update anyone?) and to phones shortly after.

Apple announces Q1 2013 results, 47.8 million iPhone, 22.9 million iPads, 12.7 million iPods, 4.1 million Macs and $46.3 billion in revenue
Apple today announced their financial results for Q1 2013, the typically lucrative holiday quarter, and it includes 47.8 million iPhone, 22.9 million iPads, 12.7 million iPods, 4.1 million Macs and $46.3 billion in revenue. Apple's executives said:
“We’re thrilled with record revenue of over $54 billion and sales of over 75 million iOS devices in a single quarter,” said Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO. “We’re very confident in our product pipeline as we continue to focus on innovation and making the best products in the world.”
“We’re pleased to have generated over $23 billion in cash flow from operations during the quarter,” said Peter Oppenheimer, Apple’s CFO. “We established new all-time quarterly records for iPhone and iPad sales, significantly broadened our ecosystem, and generated Apple’s highest quarterly revenue ever.”
The usual conference call is set to start in a few minutes and we'll be following along and providing you with any notes of interest. In the meantime, did Apple's money match your market and rumor-fueled expectations?
